Turkey’s AKP claims it is due another deputy

The AKP took 340 of the 550 seats in the grand National Assembly, gaining 46.5 percent of the popular vote.

Turkey’s ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) has claimed votes cast at border crossing points have given it another deputy in the newly elected parliament.

On Tuesday, AKP officials said that once the votes cast at various polling booths at border points across the country had been added up, the balance of votes in the south eastern province of Hakkari had shifted.

Initial returns showed that the AKP received 29,282 votes, 33.3 percent of the total cast in Hakkari. However, with the counting of absentee votes, this increased to 29,497. According to the results issued by the Higher Electoral Council (YSK), independent candidate Sabahattin Suvagci got 16.7 percent of the votes, enough to win a seat in the parliament.

AKP officials allege that Abdulmuttalip Ozbek, a candidate on their party’s list, should be the second AKP deputy from Hakkari.
